Dice Games: Aces in the Pot

Dice are some of the easiest game equipment to bring anywhere. Dice games have been entertaining folks for centuries, or even used to trade goods, housing or food using games of chance. I’m collecting dice games and sharing them with you!

Overview

Aces In the Pot is a simple family dice and counters game which needs a bit of luck to win.

Game Set Up

You’ll need:

  • 2 dice
  • Counters, such as pennies or chips; (ducks in our case-thanks to my daughter! Found here: https://amzn.to/48uW7u9) two per player

Pass 2 counters to each player before beginning the game.

The center of the table within reach of the players is called the pot or kitty.

Game Play

To begin, each player rolls one die. The player with the highest number goes first.

The first player rolls both dice. If 2,3,4 or 5 is rolled on both dice, players keep their counters and pass the dice to the player to their right. However, if an ace (one) or six is played, players must pass their tokens as follows:

  • Ace: place one counter in the kitty or pot
  • Six: move one counter to the player to your left

If two aces are thrown, these are called snake eyes and both counters are placed in the kitty.

If two six’s are rolled, they both go to the player to their left.

If an ace and six are rolled simultaneously, the six goes to the player to the left, and the ace goes into the kitty.

When a player has run out of the counters, they are out of the game. However, there’s still a possibility to win.

How to Win

Play continues until only one player has a counter(s). That player must then roll three more times without rolling a 6. If unsuccessful, the counter and dice are passed to the player on the left, who attempts to roll three times without a six. The first player to accomplish this wins!
